What Is an Emotional Support Animal?

An Emotional Support Animal may be recommended when an individual has a qualifying mental health condition and the animal is determined to provide therapeutic emotional support related to that condition.

  • No. An ESA letter does not guarantee housing approval. Housing providers make decisions based on applicable federal, state, and local laws, and individual circumstances. A valid clinical recommendation may support a request for reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act when appropriate.
